Romano) 40 146 A foray into the potential city of BottoampBruno Stefano Pezzato 147 Incursione nella cittagrave possibile di BottoampBruno Stefano Pezzato Like houses, cities have always been built to satisfy the need for protection, to shelter from danger and act as a defence against enemies since ancient times walls have been erected to confine spaces that became places where people met, cohabited and belonged, but which also kindled conflicts and profound divisions. Now that these walls have been demolished or remain only as a reminder of past eras, the fabric of the city continues to grow without restraint and it is no longer possible to establish definite limits (widespread cities, metropolitan areas, megalopolis). The clash between differences and inequalities is accentuated and the danger of assaults and personal or social failure has increased. These cities nurse a growing sense of insecurity, together with the exhausting search for an individual and collective identity which seems to have been lost in the increasingly homogenous and virtual world of commercial and communication networks, amplified and nurtured by the so-called war against terrorism, the epicentres of which are in the cities themselves: New York, Kabul, Baghdad, Madrid, London. As with urbanity and nature, the relationship between historical cities and their hinterland has been reversed: city centres provide fertile ground for competition and economic and social representation whereas, the suburbs are turning into exclusive residential areas for the elite few or, on the contrary, for the masses, often giving rise to a forced isolation. For over a decade, BottoampBruno have focused their artistic research on urban imagery, both having grown up in the working-class quarters of Turin from the economic boom to the industrial crisis and therefore direct witnesses of the progressive expansion of the city suburbs and the subsequent transformation of obsolete industrial areas. Their works are the most current expression of a journey that started about a century ago, when evolution in urban landscapes became the privileged subject of many paintings, photographs, films, cartoons and rock music. The most expressive example of cult for urban suburbs, considered to be the symbol of the new developing world, is the vibrant display of the building yards and industrial offices, of smoking chimneys on the horizon in Umberto Boccioni s paintings between 1908 and This was our country s futuristically exuberant celebration of the modern era, the offspring of dynamism: The fundamental characteristics of futuristic architecture shall be transience and impermanence. We will outlive material things. Each generation must build its own city, predicted Antonio Sant Elia in Afterwards modern cities take on the stern appearance of volumetric buildings, charge themselves with an energy that was formally synthesized in the accentuated perspective slants and the sombre tones of the landscapes painted by Mario Sironi in Milan. As Margherita Sarfatti wrote in 1920: Above all Sironi is attracted to urban landscapes, high phalansteries flanking straight roads, the geometry in the windows and fences, the relentless monotony of walls, and that other, no less imperial and brutal geometry of cars, trams, vehicles however, from this mechanical bleakness of modern cities Sironi derived (because that s the miracle of art) the elements and style of beauty and a new grandeur. He is the artist who teaches us to discern the meaning long-awaited by the poet in these dismal urban suburbs, luxe, ordre et beauteacute. On the other hand, the suburbs proposed by BottoampBruno are not subjected to the principle of order and beauty, they do not describe or enhance the real world, but are visionary spaces of reality that invalidate its mere appearance. The image of future urbanity may recall a futuristic dynamic vision. The desolate and silent atmospheres may be reminiscent of desert spaces and Sironi s metaphysical evocations, however in BottoampBruno s works, symbolic or expressive representations of the early Twentieth Century consist in settings on a hyper-real scale which catapult us directly into the scene, even engulfing us sometimes and prints (classified by the two artists as photo-montage ) that suck us into a vision of entire, decaying portions of a city. Le cittagrave, come le case, sono sempre state costruite per esigenze di protezione, per ripararsi dai pericoli e difendersi dai nemici cosigrave fin dall antichitagrave sono state erette mura e circoscritti spazi entro cui si sono sviluppate forme d incontro, di convivenza e appartenenza, ma anche accesi conflitti e scavate divisioni profonde. Oggi che tali mura sono state abbattute o rimangono a ricordo di epoche passate, i tessuti urbani si dilatano a dismisura senza che sia piugrave possibile stabilirne con certezza i confini (cittagrave diffuse, aree metropolitane, megalopoli), al loro interno si accentua lo scontro fra differenze e disuguaglianze e aumenta il pericolo di aggressioni e fallimenti personali o sociali. Vi si annidano sentimenti crescenti d insicurezza, uniti alla ricerca estenuante d identitagrave individuali e collettive che sembrano smarrirsi nel mondo sempre piugrave omogeneo e virtuale delle reti commerciali e della comunicazione, aumentati e alimentati dalla cosiddetta guerra al terrorismo i cui epicentri si trovano proprio nelle cittagrave: New York, Kabul, Bagdad, Madrid, Londra. Oltre a quello tra forme di urbanitagrave e natura, con la maggioranza della popolazione insediata nelle prime, si sta ribaltando anche il rapporto fra la cittagrave storica e il suo hinterland: il centro sta diventando terreno di competizione e rappresentanza economica e sociale, anzicheacute luogo da abitare la periferia assume invece l aspetto di luogo residenziale esclusivo, d isolamento per pochi o, all opposto, d ammassamento e segregazione forzata per molti. Sull immaginario dello spazio urbano in fieri egrave incentrata da oltre un decennio la ricerca artistica di BottoampBruno, cresciuti entrambi nei quartieri operai di Torino durante la parabola dal boom economico alla crisi industriale, quindi testimoni diretti della progressiva espansione della cittagrave in periferia e della successiva trasformazione delle aree industriali dismesse. Le loro opere costituiscono il termine piugrave attuale di un percorso iniziato circa un secolo fa, che ha individuato nell evoluzione del paesaggio urbano il soggetto privilegiato da molta pittura, fotografia, cinema, fumetto e musica rock. Il massimo esempio di culto per la periferia urbana, interpretata come simbolo del nuovo mondo in costruzione, egrave lo spettacolo vibrante dei cantieri edili e delle officine industriali, delle ciminiere fumanti all orizzonte, ripreso nei quadri di Umberto Boccioni fra il 1908 e il Il nostro paese celebrava cosigrave, con l entusiasmo del Futurismo, l avvento dell epoca moderna figlia della dinamicitagrave: i caratteri fondamentali dell architettura futurista saranno la caducitagrave e la transitorietagrave. Le cose dureranno meno di noi. Ogni generazione dovragrave fabbricarsi la sua cittagrave, prediceva Antonio Sant Elia nel In seguito, la cittagrave moderna assume l aspetto severo delle volumetrie di edifici e si carica d energia sintetizzata formalmente nei tagli prospettici accentuati, nelle cromie cupe degli scenari dipinti da Mario Sironi a Milano. Come scriveva Margherita Sarfatti nel 1920: Piacciono al Sironi soprattutto i paesaggi urbani, gli alti falansteri che fiancheggiano i rettilinei, le geometrie delle finestre e delle palizzate, l implacabile monotonia dei muri, e quell altra geometria non meno imperatoria e brutale delle automobili, dei trams, dei veicoli e tuttavia, da questo squallore meccanico della cittagrave odierna Sironi ha saputo trarre (percheacute egrave questo il prodigio dell arte) gli elementi e lo stile di una bellezza e di una grandiositagrave nuova. Egrave lui l artista che ci insegna a scorgere nelle tetre periferie urbane il senso sospirato dal poeta luxe, ordre et beauteacute. Al contrario, le periferie proposte da BottoampBruno non si sottopongono al principio di ordine e bellezza, non descrivono ne esaltano il reale, ma costituiscono luoghi visionari che trattano della realtagrave scardinandone le mere sembianze. L immagine di un urbanitagrave in divenire puograve richiamare la visione dinamica dei futuristi, le atmosfere desolate e silenziose possono ricordare gli spazi deserti e le evocazioni metafisiche di Sironi, tuttavia nelle opere di BottoampBruno le rappresentazioni simboliche o espressive del primo Novecento sono 41 148 If these places seem familiar it is not because the buildings they compose are the actual shreds of a city (Turin, Paris, Lione, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Vilnius, New York, Busan, Prato ), but because they activate our memory and cause images to resurface in our minds. Yet, BottoampBruno s art is not one of memories, referring to what has been rather it is an art that penetrates the walls to open new windows and tears open the closed confines of galleries and museums to give us a chance to look outside at what is happening around us. And with it, their art brings all the tension of an unstable, disjointed present, a moment suspended in time, which in Beckett s style, announces the arrival of something that is still absent. This theatrical property of their works probably denies the narrative dimension of the story to highlight the space of an action that has to be carried out live (delegated to the visitor or actor) and which led the two artists to create stage settings and costumes for various theatre productions. The poetics of remnants and fragments held back in an indefinite time, of the emptiness and absence that pervade the scene are closely linked to the use that the two artists make of photography, a traditional means chosen to set and carve images of reality in the absence of reality itself as Roland Barthes wrote. However, the images of BottoampBruno are not a sociological documentation of the transformation taking place in contemporary landscapes, a process that developed through photographic campaigns and missions in the United States and Europe from the Thirties onwards, nor do they provide a systematic and detailed exploration of the daily traces, even the most degraded and marginal ones, left by mankind in the landscape, experimented in the Seventies and labelled New Topographics (from the title of the exhibition held in Rochester NY in 1975 with the subtitle: Photographs of a Man - Altered Landscape). Nor do they have that subtle yearning for sublimation, the attempt to awaken supreme beauty in the heterogeneous and erratic context of contemporary suburbs, the types of houses found there and the faceless void where dissymmetry and accumulation, variety and the unusual, hybrids and what is considered traditionally different become aesthetic qualities, as described by the Italian Letizia Ragaglia in the year 2000 with regard to the photographs of Gabriele Basilico. BottoampBruno use photography as mere support for a well thought out process of image selecting, cutting, collage and retouching, not as a documentative process, linguistic instrument or a form of aesthetic adherence to the suburban reality they live and work in. The dismantling of their photographs (taken during their suburban explorations) into many distinct fragments is such that each subsequent reassembly is similar to a puzzle that keeps the single pieces that compose it together while making it possible to perceive each one, despite errors in perspective, disproportionate parts, incongruent elements and overlapping levels. It is these distortions, these deformations, evidenced in the manual assembly of the images, that underline the fragmentary nature of an approach to reality that intends to reconstruct the actual scene at a later time instead of reproducing it directly, as one would in a photograph, avoiding, in this way, the masked counterfeiting and illusions of digital manipulation. The mental aspect of cutting and fitting, the speculative dimension of urban glimpses balanced between decadence and destruction, between the need to resist and the prospect of being demolished, is similar to the works of Gordon Matta-Clark in the first half of the Seventies: through incisions, piercing and dissection of edifices, physical extractions and virtual intersections (photo collage) of entire portions of buildings, the American artist overlapped the potency of emptiness and intervals with the material solidity of architecture and imposed a social perspective of loss and abandonment on the commercial hoarding and exploitation of old buildings. BottoampBruno also open and overturn architectural space, both in their settings in galleries and museums (as I have already mentioned, they bring parts of the outside city inside) and in their works: the buildings are uncovered, sheared, reduced to pieces before they are recomposed in new visions and once they are assembled they act as an opaque, impenetrable backstage for crumbling buildings, open spaces of mud and cement covered with weeds, puddles, scraps and debris, forgotten interstices at the edge of the city. Se ci sembra di riconoscere questi luoghi non egrave percheacute gli edifici che li compongono siano effetivamente brandelli di cittagrave (Torino, Parigi, Lione, Londra, Madrid, Barcellona, Vilnius, New York, Busan, Prato. ) ma percheacute essi attivano in noi ricordi, fanno riaffiorare immagini. Eppure quella di BottoampBruno non egrave un arte di memoria, che si rivolge a ciograve che egrave stato egrave piuttosto un arte che apre varchi sulle pareti, che squarcia gli spazi chiusi di gallerie e musei per darci la possibilitagrave di guardare fuori ciograve che sta accadendo intorno a noi. Essa porta con se tutta la tensione di un presente instabile, frammentario, di una sospensione temporale che ci preannuncia, beckettianamente, l avvento di qualcosa che al momento egrave assente. Egrave probabilmente questa dimensione teatrale del lavoro, che nega il tempo narrativo della storia per evidenziare lo spazio di un azione da compiere in diretta (delegata al visitatore o all attore), ad aver portato i due artisti a ideare le scenografie e i costumi per varie produzioni di teatro. La poetica del residuo e del frammento trattenuti in un tempo indefinito, del vuoto e dell assenza che pervadono la scena, egrave strettamente legata all uso che i due artisti fanno della fotografia, mezzo tradizionalmente privilegiato per fissare e ritagliare immagini della realtagrave, in assenza della realtagrave stessa come ha scritto Roland Barthes. Le immagini di BottoampBruno non hanno perograve l attitudine a documentare sociologicamente le trasformazioni in corso nel paesaggio contemporaneo, sviluppata attraverso campagne e missioni fotografiche negli Stati Uniti e in Europa a partire dagli anni Trenta, ne quella a esplorare in modo sistematico e dettagliato le tracce quotidiane, persino le piugrave degradate e marginali lasciate dall uomo nel paesaggio, sperimentata negli anni Settanta ed etichettata come New Topographics (dal titolo della mostra tenuta a Rochester NY nel 1975 col sottotitolo: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape). Non hanno nemmeno, per rimanere in Italia, quel sottile anelito alla sublimazione, il tentativo di far affiorare la bellezza suprema dei contesti eterogenei e discontinui della periferia contemporanea, delle sue tipologie abitative e dei suoi vuoti senza volto in cui la dissimetria e l accumulazione, la molteplicitagrave e l insolito, l ibrido e il tradizionalmente difforme diventano qualitagrave estetiche, descritto da Letizia Ragaglia nel 2000 a proposito delle fotografie di Gabriele Basilico. BottoampBruno impiegano la fotografia come semplice supporto con cui attuare un operazione meditata di selezione, ritaglio, collage e ritocco delle immagini, non come processo documentativo ne come strumento linguistico o forma di adesione estetica alla realtagrave suburbana in cui vivono e operano. La loro destrutturazione delle fotografie (scattate nel corso di perlustrazioni nelle periferie) in tanti frammenti distinti fa si che ogni ricomposizione successiva assomigli a un puzzle in grado di tenere insieme e far recepire i singoli pezzi di cui si compone, nonostante eventuali errori di prospettiva, sproporzioni fra le parti, incongruitagrave fra gli elementi accostati o fra i piani sovrapposti. Sono proprio queste distorsioni, questi travisamenti resi manifesti dal montaggio manuale delle immagini, a sottolineare la natura frammentaria di un approccio alla realtagrave che intende ricostruirla a posteriori anzicheacute riprodurla direttamente come fa la fotografia, evitando pure le falsificazioni mascherate e le illusioni della manipolazione digitale. L aspetto mentale dei ritagli e degli incastri, la dimensione speculativa di scorci urbani posti in bilico fra decadenza e distruzione, fra la necessitagrave di resistere e la prospettiva di essere demoliti, s avvicina a quello dei lavori realizzati da Gordon Matta-Clark nella prima metagrave degli anni Settanta: attraverso incisioni, forature e dissezioni di edifici, estrazioni fisiche e intersecazioni virtuali (collage fotografici) d intere porzioni di fabbricati, l artista americano ha sovrapposto l effettivitagrave del vuoto e degli intervalli alla consistenza materiale dell architettura e imposto una prospettiva sociale di perdita e abbandono su quella commerciale d accaparramento e sfruttamento di vecchie costruzioni. Anche BottoampBruno mettono in atto una pratica di apertura e ribaltamento degli spazi
